Watari

Wanderers in motion

Welcome to Watari

Watari is a collaborative dance collective rooted in the understanding of the body. As a duo we’re working at the intersection of contemporary and club dance vocabularies,  carving, layering, and shifting through space with quiet intensity and curiosity.
At Watari, we approach dance as something ephemeral yet deeply grounded. Our movement reflects processes of transformation, subtlety, and precision. We don’t just perform: we listen, revisit, reshape. The body remembers. Each gesture carries history and possibility.

Methodology

Watari is  a  movement technique that does not originate from either street/club styles or contemporary dance alone but emerges from the meeting point of both. This practice seeks to dissolve the boundaries between genres and training cultures, offering a shared field where dancers from any background can engage equally. Our aim is to create an environment that is accessible, inclusive, and creatively challenging, allowing students to develop both their technical skills and individual artistic voices.

We don’t want people to dance like us. Instead, we guide them through our language so they can discover their own entry point and personal expression. Our classes combine physical preparation, strength, grounding, and mobility with creative exploration rooted in our core principles: the dancer as sculpture (Ivory as Body), the memory of gestures (Ivory as Memory), the impact of beginnings (Preset), and the recognition of forces beyond the self (Initial Point of Origin). Through these, we invite dancers to explore movement as both precise and open, individual and collective.

Our Principles

Our work is defined by purposeful movement and intentional decisions, where each gesture builds upon what came before. We recognize the power of beginnings and the path they set, while embracing constant evolution through change and spontaneity. Drawing inspiration from both human and non-human sources, we create space for the unseen forces that shape our process, knowing that every action leaves its mark and contributes to a larger, ongoing transformation.

How We Work

Watari is not product driven, it's process-centered, sensorial, and relational. We hold space with attentiveness and care, moving with softness and alertness. Our practice is shaped by listening: to each other, to the space, and to what the work demands.
Described as offering a “humble yet assured presence,” our approach values depth over spectacle, intimacy over scale, and clarity over excess.
